Project Canyet for the reintroduction of the griffon vulture in the Sierra of Marola has consolidated a population of 80 individuals of this protected bird in the zone. Although most part of the vultures have placed themselves in the proximity of the Barranc del Cint, it is to highlight, as relevant novelty, that it has been detected a couple which has nested in the area of the Huit Piletes of Cocentaina.

Yesterday FAPAS Alcoi members´ staff, the promoter organization of Project Canyet, ended the campaign for putting rings in the breeding of this year. Since last month of June, seven chicks of vulture that were born on last spring have been put rings on them. This works have been have been very complicated, as it is necessary to climb to access to the nests.  After the rings are placed, these birds can be identified and controlled if they appear in any other place. It is to highlight that another campaign to put rings will be carried out once autumn comes, although this time on adult individuals.

Since Fapas Alcoi began this plan to reintroduce the vulture in the Sierra de Mariola in the year 2000, fifteen vulture individuals were born. Likewise, 28 couples have nested, stabilizing in areas close to the Barranc del Cint. Getting off  the topic, there are other birds with no couple that are also settling down in this spot.

Fapas Alcoi staff is elaborating a census with the colonies of vultures of this shire. Alvar Seguí, member of this organization, pointed out that these data will be submitted to a national centre which tracks the populations of this specie. Seguí mentioned that in “in the corresponding official list it will be included the province of Alicante as area of nesting of the vulture, while in the last census only the colonies of the province of Castellón were included”. This situation did not happen since the last century, when these birds disappeared from the mountains of this shire.

Canyet Project is a unique environmental initiative, which has obtained an important success. The first step for the reintroduction of the vulture in the shire was the installation of captivity birds breeding place. Subsequently, some individuals were released and finally, it has been achieved to consolidate a stable population.
